Every business should undoubtedly make Search Engine Optimization (SEO) a priority. The point of SEO is to try to get your site ranked as high up as possible on search engines like Google and Bing.
At its simplest, SEO is finding ways to increase that chances of your website showing up on user’s search results. For example, if you own a beauty salon in Denver, you’ll want to come up the first page when someone is Googling “Beauty Salon Denver.” Without even trying, you can gain a new client.
But SEO can get really complicated, as well, which is when you might want to hire a professional. In the meantime, here are a few easy steps you can take to get your site moving on up.
- Monitor:
You want to make sure your efforts are working, so keep track of where you’re ranking. Use tools like Alexa or
Google toolbar.
- Watch you keywords:
You want to make you’re using you keywords everywhere you can (titles, content, URLs). Keywords are what people would type into Google when searching your business. Like the example of “Beauty Salon Denver.”
- Link to yourself:
Draw more traffic to your site by linking to yourself. So for example, a user is reading blog one. Within blog
one the content mentions something about cats and you wrote an entire blog post on cats two weeks ago. Link back to your cat post. The more clicks on your site the higher you’ll rank.
- Update your content:
Your content needs to be updated regularly so people keep coming back. The best way to help your site have new content regularly is by integrating a blog. Back to the beauty salon example: On the Denver Beauty Salon website, you would have the owner blogging about =beauty tips daily.
- Your name;
This won’t pertain to everyone, but if you’re thinking of opening a company or starting a new website give it a
name that is a series of keywords. Like name your salon Beauty Salon Denver. That may sound boring, but when the clients start coming through the door, you won’t be complaining.
Do your research on SEO. If you don’t have the funds to hire someone to manage your SEO program, make sure you educate yourself on the topic. For some companies, it can make a world of a difference.
