When you first start a business or go out on your own, having a “more is more” attitude is totally understandable. You think more customers equals more sales, resulting in a bigger business. But, what about starting small with a solid base of customers who will keep returning for more and more? Taking time from the start to build a solid base could be just the foundation you need to keep your business growing at a steady pace over time. For now, let’s put the bigger is better approach aside and take a look at my tips to build a base of clients you can rely on.
Building a Solid Customer Base
- Get to know your customers. Talk to them, be personable and eventually you’ll have a relationship that allows you to suggest additional products or ideas.
- Send an occasional handwritten thank-you. That personal touch will go a long way.
- Communicate with your customers. Gathering contact info is a key factor here – it gives you the opportunity to send out monthly e-blasts, newsletters or even offer discounts to returning clients.
- Keep special occasions (like birthdays) in your database – offer specials or remember to congratulate your customers on these important days.
- Follow-up. Did they try a new product or service you offer? Give those customers a call to find out about their experience. This could even result in referrals.
With a solid customer base, your business will grow at a slow and steady rate, a model you can rely on. How do you connect with your clients to ensure they’ll stick with you?
