Choosing a Mentor For Your Career

Who is the right mentor for your career? Do you remember in your youth, there was a particular individual that you admired so much so, that your found yourself mimicking her actions? Role models are important. They inspired us to become better individuals. They empower us to create our own paths through wisdom, support, and guidance. They serve as sounding boards when we need to vent. They serve as correctors when we get off track. In essence role models rock!

When choosing a role model for your career focus on the weaknesses that you would like to strengthen. Many people tend to make the mistake of trying to find a person that has all the values and characteristics that they would like to have. Remember, no one is perfect. It is okay to look up to more than one person as a role model.

Consider the tips below to aid you in your search:

1. Find a person that is further along than you. Experience is a great teacher. A person who is further along will be able to help you avoid unnecessary pitfalls.

2. Choose a person who has the time to assist you. They will see your growth as a priority and will dedicate time to you throughout the week.

3. The individual must be a good communicator.

4.Find a person that has done something admirable in their career, community or family.

5. You need a person who you will trust to check you when you are wrong. If you don’t trust this person you will not receive criticism well.
