Dealing With A Horrible Boss

The movie “Horrible Bosses” was quite funny but for many employees, the reality had made it to the big screen. You may have had the experience of or have had the experience of working with a mean boss. Unfortunately, the current economy does not make it easy to leave a job in search for another quick hire. Until the time becomes available for you to leave, these helpful tips may help save your job and sanity.

– Document your work. Keep track of your accomplishments and compliments you get from co-workers or managers of other departments. Record the date of these incidents. You have to cover yourself at all times.

– Avoid responding the way your boss responds to you. Two wrongs do not make a right. Mark your respect boundaries to document when your bosses crosses those boundaries. However, watch your response. Your boss is in a position of authority. Always follow your chain of command when dealing with grievances.

– Keep your network active. Continue to circulate your resume around your network. You never know when a position is available. Continue to attend community affairs and networking events. This will keep you visible.

– Confront your boss with evidence. It’s easy for a boss to yell at you based on statements you yourself make. It’s harder if you confront the boss with detailed data, in particular data that has objective measures and shows that you have accomplished assigned tasks.

– Get through he day with a little humor. Humor is a great way to deal with unpleasant situations — hence the need, in movies and television, for comic relief following a tense scene. Rather than be upset about a past encounter, try laughing about it. Don’t allow the mean boss to steal your joy or ruin the rest of your evening.
