Owning and operating a business means one thing for sure, when there’s enough work, you need enough people to get the job done! Over the years I have hired many people. When reviewing resumes and interviewing candidates, skills are pretty clear, but sometimes passion just shines through. I have found that in a lot of cases, to hire for passion and not skill is all you really need.
Hire for Passion or Skill?
In a world where you are represented by your resume, your skills sell your ability to potential employers. Showing off your passion is more of a challenge. It seems pretty true that passion and excitement are often overlooked when years of experience and high-level skill sets can get the job done. But, when you hire for passion and not skill, you often find a star employee. Passion and drive can really set someone apart in the job world – when an employee is excited to learn, the energy can be totally contagious! That employee will gain the necessary skills because they want to, not because they have to.
Think carefully the next time you are hiring or applying for jobs. Don’t be afraid to show off your desire to learn, and maybe your potential employer will hire for passion and not skill. What’s more important to you, passion or skill?
