Smartphones are one of the most profound innovations of the century – they allow us to work on the go and stay connected wherever we are in the world. I was horrified to discover today that the average young adult spends FIVE HOURS per day on social media. Unless that person is a social media professional, this is bad news for you, and businesses around the world. If these statistics are accurate, we’re all paying our employees salaries based on eight hour days when they’re only actually working for 3 – scary stuff!
How Social Media Is Ruining Your Life (And Your Business)
#1 You’re missing moments.
Instead of soaking up the ambiance of moments and creating memories in real time, you’re filming them on your smartphone. Life is passing you by – put the phone down.
#2 You’re less productive.
You’re wasting five hours every day that you could be spending on pursuing your business or life goals. Just think what you could do with that extra thirty-five hours a week! That’s almost a full-time job when you put it into perspective. Unless you’re a social media professional, you should not be wasting this much of your employer’s time (or yours) aimlessly patroling other peoples lives. Constant distractions disrupt your workflow. Put your phone face down for an afternoon – you’ll be amazed by how much more productive you become.
#3 You lose communication skills.
You’ll start using text talk and subconsciously writing emails using up to 140 characters if you’re not careful. Abbreviations are fine for social media platforms and casual emails – not for the formal emails if you desire to be taken seriously.
#4 You’re living on another planet.
The carefully curated image feeds and edited photos are intentionally created to tell a story; none of it is real everyday life. You’ll start suffering from life envy and living your life in a certain way you think is best perceived via social media. Who cares what other people think? Live the life that makes YOU happy.
