First things first, you must believe you are not being paid enough for what you bring to the table, and have results to back up your case as to why you deserve a pay rise.
Wisdom Wednesday: How to Ask for a Pay Rise and Get It
Find out what you are worth and build a strong case. Time to buy your friend in HR a coffee or two. Have stats ready on what other people at your level are earning, put together a chart visualizing your successes and how much of an asset you are to the organization.
Avoid playing the sympathy card at all costs – an employer wants to know you want a pay rise because you know your worth and have proved an invaluable team member. Saying you need a pay rise because you have three children or a higher house mortgage isn’t going to fly.
Have a counter offer at the ready to open negotiations; if your company isn’t in a position to offer you a cash increase, you could ask for benefits such as more holiday, or flexible working arrangements including remote working options.
