Are you as excited about MAWC 2015 as I am?? With the Conference coming up in just a few days, I thought it would be a good time to get everyone prepared with the right mindset. MAWC and conferences in general are some of the best opportunities you’ll have for networking with other people in your industry. So don’t let that opportunity go to waste due to lack of preparation. If you want to make the most of your experience, here are some steps you can take to prepare for networking opportunities.
How to Prepare for a Networking Event
- Pack your business cards: People will need to know how to stay in touch with you. And while it’s very easy and convenient to find someone online, exchanging business cards is always a personal touch – and an easy way of remembering who you spoke with. Not to mention, you can make notes on that card to remember what you chatted about.
- Go with an open mind: Go with the intention of meeting new people, making new contacts, and talking to as many people as possible. If you feel closed off or aren’t in the right mindset, it will show in your body language and you won’t be approached.
- Brush up on your networking skills: Know what you hope to get out of the experience before you go. Here is a list of tips to keep in mind and brush up on before the big conference.
- Know what to say: Have a few topics ready at your disposal so you won’t find yourself with nothing to say. If you have a hard time in social situations, think of a few topics beforehand so you’ll feel more confident and prepared.
- Be friendly and approachable: Don’t cross your arms, slink back into a corner, or look over people’s heads. These are all signs you’re not interested in talking. If you relax, smile, and look friendly and approachable, it will help your cause and allow a natural progression of events.
- Talk to new people: Try to break out of your comfort zone and talk to people outside of your circle. You’re there to build new relationships and catch up with individuals you haven’t seen in a while. Now’s your chance to get out there and change up the conversation.
