Are you starting to feel a slump in your fitness goals for 2016? You’ve been doing pretty well up to now and I want to make sure we keep you motivated. At the end of the day, the goal is to be healthy and happy with yourself. There is no perfect size out there for anyone! It’s all about having fun and feeling the best you can in your skin.

So how can I motivate my girls out there for February? I spoke to one of the hottest New York DJ’s, Edgar “Shoboy” Sotelo, host of “Shoboy in the Morning” on 92.3 AMP to find out how to hook up your tunes so they keep you moving when you hit the gym, trek it during a hike, or when you’re zoned into your run.

“Music is a great motivator to exercise because, it makes time go by faster, the rhythm stimulates your senses and energizes you to go above and beyond your normal work-out capacity,” he said. “The best part about bumping music while you work out, especially at the gym, is that you don’t have to listen to the big sweaty dude grunting in the weight room— amen to that!”

Shoboy explained the importance of selecting music based on what type of activity you will be doing. So you wouldn’t select the same song to run to as you would for yoga, for example. “I suggest that you choose songs depending on the type of exercise and movements that you are going to do. Up tempo for high energy, intense work outs and mid to lo tempo for yoga and stretching. EDM (Dance) and Hip Hop are perfect genres to boost your energy.”

So what songs would you find Shoboy jamming to if you spotted him at the gym? “My favorite songs, that Amp me up to work out are: Major Lazor’s “Light it up”, “Middle” by DJ Snake, “Sorry” Latino Remix with the Biebs and J Balvin, “Ginza” by J Balvin and you can never go wrong with the classic “Summer” by Calvin Harris…especially the Diplo Remix, fuego!”

If you’re looking for artists to kick-start your search for workout tunes, he suggests starting with some of his go-to talent. “Drake, Kanye, Jack Ü, Major Lazor, Ellie Goulding (have you seen her workouts on Instagram? Fierce!) and of course Beyonce and Jay Z.”

As I mentioned earlier, the most important thing is to enjoy whatever you do. This is going to be key in keeping up with your fitness goals throughout the year. Shoboy adds, “Have fun, disconnect from the real world, feel the music and don’t get too caught up on your phone while you workout. That’s a big challenge for me, one moment I’m selecting my next playlist and then I’m on Insta, Twitter, Snap, Email etc. Focus and Get it! The best is yet to come.”
