Do you ever try on a bra and realize it wasn’t a perfect fit? It is difficult to find exactly what size you are since brands all cut their sizes differently. Yasmin Wong, co-owner and designer of Yasmin Joseph Lingerie weighs in on this topic and gives advice on how to find the perfect bra for you, no matter what size you are.
“Most women do not get measured or measure themselves,” said Yasmin. They are uncomfortable or cannot be bothered. Can you blame them?”
Much like vanity sizing with clothing brands, you won’t always get the same sizing across all brands. So it is important that you stick with companies that you find fit you well and you feel comfortable in.
“Many brands have inconsistent sizing, therefore even if you are measured, one brand may have a tighter or bigger fit than another brand in the same size,” she explained. “A lot of women will buy a bra because they like it, even if it does not fit properly. Perhaps they do not have their size? Fluctuations in weight— a few pounds will affect the way you feel or fit into a bra.”
Yasmin suggests you check off the following four points when shopping for a bra:
#1. Tightness – Make sure it is not tight, pulling down on the shoulder, digging in to your body, or you cannot breathe.
#2. Comfort – Comfort, comfort…you want any bra to feel good and be so comfortable that you could wear it for many hours, even most of the day.
#3. Support – make sure you have the right support for your body type, small bust, large, etc.
#4. Fit – make sure the underwire is not inches away from your chest, your breasts are facing forward and not hanging to the side, the cups are wrinkled or gaping, the back of the band is not riding up.
Does this mean you have to spend a lot to get a good bra? Yasim says, no. “It is important to look for a brand or bra that is great quality, good value that fits you well. There are so many bras for many types of women and price does not always mean it is better.”
Yasmin, who works alongside her father on her collection, promises many new pieces will be added to her line very soon. “We are launching a “Vintage Lace” and “Everyday Sexy” collection this week, a small “Sports” range in December and a “Plus Size” collection early next year,” she said. We have strapless, push-ups, and possibly more sports bras in the pipeline for next year.”
