I love my brothers and my sister so much! I also feel blessed to have my family extend beyond blood. I consider some of my closest friends to be my family. To celebrate National Sibling Day, I’m going to share some interesting facts about siblings.
- You learn to socialize from your siblings. According to a study, you learn the most from your parents, but your siblings teach you how to act. “Siblings are closer to the social environments that children find themselves in during the majority of their day, which is why it’s important not to overlook the contributions that they make on who we end up being.”
- Having a younger sibling affects your health—for the good, of course. According to another study, becoming a big brother or sister before a certain age can lower your risk of becoming obese.
- Birth order can shape your personality. Older siblings seem to take on more responsibility, while younger siblings are known as more easygoing!
- A study from Brigham Young University finds having a sister, even if she’s younger than you, protects you from feelings of loneliness, guilt, fear, and self-consciousness, especially if you’re a young teen.
