If you’re just stepping into the world of e-commerce and online businesses, you know that having an online presence is absolutely essential. This is something I like to talk about at our conventions because I feel the Internet is such a huge platform and such a wonderful opportunity for a startup. So how do you get started? And what do you do to ensure it’s up to par and working for you? From your website to social media, there’s a lot to think about. But when done well, the rewards can be incredible. No matter what type of industry you’re in, you can easily give your online presence a quick health check and reassess anything that may need updates here and there. Let’s take a look at the essentials for keeping business running smoothly and successfully.

5 Essential Tips for Running an Online Business

#1. Be sure your website offers basic, essential information. First and foremost, you want your customers and clients to know what services and products you offer, what that means for them and how to get in touch with you when they want to make a purchase or register for a service. Double checking to be sure your website is easy to navigate and your contact information is up to date is the first step in offering great online customer service.

#2. Assess your social media presence. There’s nothing more effective right now than utilizing social media to promote your business and drive web traffic over to your site, so making sure you’re capitalizing on that is essential. But think of it like any other promotional or advertising plan, it should be succinct and to the point, while also engaging and interesting. You want to gain customers here – so think like they do! What do they want to know? What are they interested in? What can you offer that will solve a problem they have? Each time you post to social media, ask yourself these questions and make sure your posts are on point.

#3. Use compelling images. We all know that graphics and images are driving the web and social media these days and you have a chance to be a piece of that – by using images that are crisp, clear and make sense for your posts. Doesn’t matter what channel – Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter….make sure your photos are intriguing and looking good – remember these photos represent your company and you. Same goes for video!

#4. Be sure to communicate with your online audience. When you’re running a business, your audience is also your potential and current client base, so making sure you’re available and communicating is essential. Take time each day to respond to comments, inquiries etc. You’ll showcase the human being behind the brand and be known for your responsive and timely customer service. Don’t skimp or get lazy in this area – it’s essential!

#5. Determine the message of your brand and stick to it. Once you have a clear picture of what you and your business is all about, developing that key brand messaging is a critical next step. From images, to slogans to advertisements, you want to be known for doing one thing well and having a mission that you stand behind. Avoid floundering and flip flopping by finding your brand voice, using it and sticking to it for the long haul.
