With “earth day” just around the corner, it’s important to become involved in your community and promote environmental awareness in your town. There are innumerable ways to help your community and the world at large, but many of those options require time that most people do not have to spare. Do not feel guilty just yet, I put together a few suggestions and ideas on how to help your community and take part of earth week.
- Organize “Earth Day” Clean Up: Many towns and neighborhoods probably already do this, but if they don’t this is a good start.Contact your local city or county public works department, as they might have an“Earth Day” Neighborhood clean up day planned.
- Attend local festivals or other events. Many have free admission and activities. Most festivals are actually fund raisers for non-profit organizations who make their money through sponsorships.
- Take part in a Tree Planting event: I suggest you check out the Arbor Day Foundation site, it lists tree-planting activities by state for Arbor Day. You can also get tips on organizing your own events at their site.
- Organize and participate in public transit day or bike day. The city of Miami has Bike Miami day in where it promotes environmental awareness and the use of public transportation vs private. If this is something your community does not have try to organize one on a small scale.Try to encourage your family, friends and neighbors to join by using their bike or walking for the day.
- Get Technical:Many schools collect old cell phones, used ink cartridges and used computers. You can check your local school system’s website as they usually post ongoing activities there.
