Do you ever find yourself with a desire to set big goals, but you’re just not sure how to start or what to do to get it all going? It doesn’t matter if they’re personal or professional, making a leap to something new (and something big) can feel extremely daunting and like a real challenge looming over you. But you know what? It’s all doable – it really is. It’s a matter of putting your mind to it, knowing there is a finish line and sticking it out until you get there. Even when times get tough – the reward is so great – you have to take that leap. Not sure how to really thrive and not just survive? Here’s a few tips for setting big goals and working toward them.
6 Ways to Really Thrive
#1. Assess the situation. What is it you want to change and why? Is it your career? Is it something financial? Is it your relationship? No matter what it is – you need to know what you’re after in order to plan how to get there. Once you have the actual goals lined out, you can start working on what the steps to achieve those goals look like.
#2. Break it down into doable chunks. You know that saying, “Slow and steady wins the race?” It’s absolutely 100% true because slow and steady makes things palatable and achievable. Once you can assess the small milestones that will make up your ultimate goal – you’ll have no problem achieving what you’re after. Let’s say you’re embarking on a new education – you’re thinking it’s time to get that MBA. Break it down into one class a semester – doable while working full time. That’s something you can envision – and doesn’t seem daunting at all.
#3. Don’t wait. It’s one thing to dream about your goals. It’s another thing to talk about your goals. But the only way to achieve those goals? Actually go after them. Now is the time and there’s no better place to start than right now. If you want to go get something, you have to get up and go get it – so what are you waiting for?
#4. Put together a plan. Once you get this plan on paper, you’ll see that it’s something you actually can accomplish. Think about the other things at stake – and work those into the equation. What will you need to do in terms of adjusting your schedule or having child care. How soon can you get started, what else needs to align? Getting the plan mapped out is half the battle because once you know exactly what you need to do, the whole thing becomes part of your daily routine.
#5. Tell your friends and family what you’re up to. You know why? They will help hold you accountable. No one wants to see you achieve big things as much as the people who love you. So let them in on your little secret and they’ll support you and help you along the way too. Everything is better with a cheerleading section – it’s inspiring and you won’t feel alone. So go public as soon as you’re ready!
#6. Reassess along the way. Things change – there is no doubt about it. And, as things change in your life, you may need to adjust your plan accordingly to accommodate – but that’s OK. Just make sure you work the plan for your goals into the rest of your life. Just because things are changing, does not mean it’s time to give up.
