One of the biggest misconceptions when it comes to happiness is that it lies in the hands of somebody or something else. The truth is, happiness is a choice, a state of mind, and a personal thing each individual has control over. Stop waiting for another day, another situation, or anyone else to make you happy. Do it for yourself. Here are nine ways you can immediately begin taking action towards your own happiness and fulfillment.
9 Ways to Be Happier
- Stop caring about what others think – If you’re constantly censoring yourself because you’re worried about what others will think of you, you’ll never live a happy life. Be free and allow yourself to do more of what makes you happy. Even if it means incurring some sideways glances from others. In the end, you’re the one living this life.
- Do what you enjoy, not what’s expected of you – If you’re chasing a career that makes you miserable because you think that’s what’s expected of you, rather than pursuing a passion you’re truly talented at, chances are you’re going to be resentful towards others who are following the path you’d like to take. Explore your passions as best you can.
- Stop criticizing yourself – We are often our harshest critics, filling our own minds with doubts and criticisms. The next time you give yourself a harsh comment, picture how it would feel if someone else were saying it to you. Chances are, you wouldn’t take it from someone else, so don’t take it from yourself, either.
- Exercise – You’ve probably heard that exercising releases endorphins that make you feel happier. Get out, treat yourself better, and make some time to exercise.
- Eat well – If you feel better, you’ll look better and vice versa. And all of that begins by what you put into your body. But don’t deny yourself the occasional treat now and then!
- Speak your mind – Holding things in only tend to make us feel more frustrated. If you have something to say to someone, do your best to speak your mind in a way that will be beneficial to both parties. You’ll probably feel relieved once you do.
- Make time for what matters to you – Schedule yourself a little better to allow time for what you feel is important. If you’re constantly giving your time away to others, you’ll never have time for what you love or what makes you feel good. Be sure to give yourself some time to follow your heart.
- Pick up a hobby – Indulge in a pastime that thrills you. You’ll be amazed at the good it does for your mind and spirit.
- Spend time with the ones you love – It should be the easiest thing to do, but we sometimes forget to do it. Make time for friends and family; they’re what make life worthwhile.
