Finding your voice can be the hardest thing you can do as a writer. It takes time and patience. Often, the best advice writers get is to read other writers in order to find that writing voice and tone their searching for. Sure, cultivating a voice is not an easy task, but there are some ways to help you get there faster. To help you, I’ve got my own tips. It’s all about being open to letting yourself shine as writer. Read on and be sure to let me know what you think in the comments section.
Listen To Yourself Talk- I know this may be painful because it’s sometimes hard hearing the sound of our own voices, but I want you to stay open minded. Record a chat between you and a close friend. Make sure it’s someone whom you feel comfortable around. Listen to the conversation and notice the unique way that you speak. Do you use slang or proper vocabulary? What words do you use most often? Focus on how you structure sentences.
Read- Read plenty of blogs and books. Who are your favorite conversational writers? See how they structure their sentences and focus on the nuances of their language. It’s all about learning so why not learn from the best?
This Isn’t An Email- If you’re trying to write conversationally, remember that it’s okay to break a few rules. You aren’t writing any emails, so formality goes out the window. Address your reader directly. Have no fear when it comes to speaking to your reader!
Don’t Be Too Informal- Be informal, but not too informal. Sure, address your reader when you can, but try to keep away from slang. You’re ‘uh’s’ and ‘um’s’ don’t work when you’re speaking, so don’t use them while writing. Be sure to always use proper grammar and punctuation. You still need to make your writing legible and understandable!
