How many times have you created this perfectly calculated
plan only to find “this plan” had a brain of its own? It’s happen to all of us:
where we’ve set a goal and envisioned every step from A to Z. But the truth is
life barely happens as we planned. And although most of us know this kernel of
truth, we still try to control it when it’s clearly trying to take its own
path.
After taking so much time and effort into crafting a plan,
how do you deal with the disappointment when it doesn’t work out? Here’s a tip:
be flexible. Goals are important. And, yes, we should have an overall idea as
to how to conquer that goal. But that does not mean we need a step-by-step
itinerary. We simply need a roadmap. The steps are not important. What is important
is staying focused on the big picture: your goal.
Let’s say you planned this big outdoor pool party. Your goal
was to have all your friends come and have a good time. The day arrives and
it’s raining. What do you do? If
you have this defeated look on your face, I assure you all your guests will
feel just as disappointed. But if you bring the food, music, and entertainment
inside, chances are you’ll still have a great party. In fact, it’ll probably be
more memorable than any other pool party. So you accomplished your goal by
giving everyone a good time. Your “outline” had to be adjusted, but you still
achieved the outcome you were striving for.
Being able to adapt and be flexible can almost be considered
a survival skill. If you fail to be flexible, you’ll find yourself rolled in a
little ball, helpless and defeated. And if you’re looking for success that is
not way to go about it.
The next time you find yourself a little disappointed by
your plan’s free-spirit, instead of resisting the change let it be. We’re so
used to doing, but sometimes the only thing left to do is be. And if you’re
able to shift gears and go with the flow, you’ll see that the path is more
likely to be a better one than you could have ever imagined.
