If there’s one key thing aboutĀ open communication we can all learn, it’s how to master our non-verbal cues. Your body language speaks volumes when you’re not even aware of it. And if you’re trying to make a great first impression, what you’re not saying is just as important as what you are.

With our World Conference just days away, our focus is on making the experience the most valuable one for everyone attending. And part of that, is providing opportunities to network with leaders, peers, and potential new contacts. But successful networking begins with body language. A good handshake, proper eye contact, and a friendly stance are just the beginning.

Body Language & Success: 3 Ways You May Be Pushing People Away

#1. Crossed arms. With crossed arms being a surefire sign of insecurity, this gesture alone can drive people away. You appear closed off, unapproachable, and possibly frustrated when your arms are crossed in front of your chest. Instead, relax your arms and keep them at your sides.

#2. Slouched posture. A slouched posture is not only unprofessional, it also implies you’re not in command. It can also appear to someone else as you’re feeling lazy or tired. Instead, straighten your back and shoulders and keep your head up. Try this and see how much better you feel. This tiny change can make you seem much more confident and in control.

#3. Tense facial expressions. This is something I always notice in my team. If my girls have a tense face, I call them out and ask them if they’re ok. Because stress and tension can easily show up on your face and convey the message that you’re worried or not up to the task. A simple smile, proper eye contact, and relaxed facial features can make a world of difference in how colleagues and clients view you. It also helps you look younger. šŸ˜‰
