Have you heard about the legislature recently passed in California? The new law, which goes into effect January 1st, gives underage kids the chance to take down (and permanently get rid of) inappropriate things they’ve posted to social media sites and other online sources.
This new law requires “the operator of an Internet Web site, online service, online application, or mobile application to permit a minor who is a registered user of the operator’s Internet Website, online service, online application, or mobile application, to remove, or to request and obtain removal of, content or information posted”.
Eraser Button Bill: Kids in California Can Permanently Delete Social Media Posts
“Groundbreaking protection for our kids who often act impetuously with postings of ill-advised pictures or messages before they think through the consequences.”
Known as the “Eraser Button Bill,” there are quite a few loopholes that have yet to be answered. Like what happens when someone makes a comment – will the comment also be erased? Does that violate freedom of speech? Are things ever truly and permanently erased from the internet? And, furthermore does this give kids the green light to act impulsively because they know it can be erased?
What do you think of this new law? Should kids be given a social media get out jail free card?
