According to The New Yorker, 2016 was the “year of the hygge.” Hygge? What’s that? “A Danish term defined as ‘a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.’ Pronounced ‘hoo-guh,’ the word is said to have no direct translation in English, though ‘cozy’ comes close.”— and now this Danish concept is taking over America. It seems like people are going crazy over Hygge.

Slip into some comfy clothes- To hygge properly, you need some sweatpants, yoga pants, or any pants that you find super comfy. Add some socks. If it’s cold, put on a hat and a hoodie. This trend is all about comfort, people!
Make the atmosphere your own- Make a hyggelig (hygge-like) atmosphere at home with scented candles and soft blankets. Light a fire if the mood takes you. These are all great hyggelig things to keep around your place.
Turn off your phone- Danes consider looking at your phone all day to be the least hyggelig thing that you can do. Turn on the TV, watch a feel-good movie, and invite some friends over. Or, read a book instead. Imagine yourself sitting by a nook in your home, reading a book in snuggly socks and a blanket. Now that’s hyggelig.
Forget your diet- No, seriously. Hygge is all about baked goods, warm drinks, and comfort foods (which, let’s admit, don’t include salads). Eat well, enjoy the people around you, and keep warm— that’s what this concept is all about.
