Did you know that today February 4, 2014 marks Facebook’s 10th birthday? Crazy, right? It seems like just yesterday I was logging in for the first time, but it also feels like Facebook has been a fixture in our daily routines forever. With more than 1.2 billion worldwide users, Facebook and founder, Mark Zuckerberg certainly has something to be proud of. Zuckerberg launched Facebook in 2004 from a dorm room at Harvard University. The original plan was to create a way for students to digitally connect – who knew that just a decade later, Facebook would be a worldwide household name.
According to PC World Magazine, Zuckerberg was reflective about Facebook’s growth at a recent industry event, saying that he never envisioned Facebook becoming so large or influential. “It was awesome to have this utility and community at our school.” He also thought someone, someday would build something as big, “It didn’t even occur to me that it could be us.”
Amid the constant growth of Facebook, there are also lots of challenges – keeping up in an ever-changing digital and mobile world. Other social networking sites and apps could eventually give Facebook a challenge when it comes to user base. For now – congrats to Facebook and Mark (who has a lot to celebrate in 2014) – he also turns 30 in May. Happy Birthday, Facebook!
