With the holidays just around that corner, it means the New Year is right on the heels of time also, so it’s time to start thinking resolutions. Whether you’re on the fence about your resolutions or you’re having trouble coming up with good, challenging ideas, you can always think of it more in terms of creating better habits. When you take the pressure of a New Year’s resolution away and you simply challenge yourself to develop some better habits – you’re well on your way to positive change. And, that’s what really matters! Making the most out of the life you have by being the healthiest, happiest person you can be. Still waffling about what positive changes you need most? Here’s some ideas for good habits to pick up in the New Year.
6 Good Habits to Pick Up in the New Year
#1. Waking up earlier. Sounds so simple, right? Changing your sleep habits is actually one the toughest adjustments out there, but once you get on a routine it feels oh so good. While you’re at it, heading to bed a bit earlier would help in the process too. Whatever you do, try to get your eight hours in every night.
#2. Make nutrition a priority. Going on a diet feels like so much pressure, doesn’t it? So how about changing your approach to food and what you eat? Think more in terms of leafy greens and loads of veggies with an emphasis on lean meats and loads of water? Rather than counting the calories, count the good stuff.
#3. Enrolling in continuing education or some sort of class. Sounds fun, doesn’t it? To work your brain or maybe your artistic side just a bit. Let’s say you’ve always wanted to take up painting or learn another language. There’s no time like the New Year to start broadening your horizons. You’ll probably meet some great new friends too.
#4. Read more books. In this day and age when we spend so much time on our smart phones, books have fallen a bit by the wayside – but really is there anything better than a good book? Make reading each night a priority and you’ll find yourself having a chance to get away from it all and get lost in the fantasy.
#5. Find an exercise routine that’s fun and rewarding for you. If heading to the gym after work each night to run on the treadmill sounds like absolutely no fun to you – then don’t do it! There are so many interactive and great ways to exercise out there – explore your options – so that it’s rewarding and something you want to do.
#6. Spend more time at home with the TV off. It’s so tempting when we walk in the door to automatically turn on the television and get lost in everything happening on the big screen. So, how about getting in the habit of spending some good quality family time together before the TV goes on each night? Think about taking a walk or cooking dinner together – debriefing the day – and then watching just a little bit before bed.
