Honoring Veterans Day 2015

Veterans Day 2015

Has anyone out there ever wondered exactly what the history of Veterans Day is? Here’s the scoop:

Veterans Day 2015

“Veterans Day is a public holiday that is dedicated to honoring anyone who has served in the United States military. The holiday began as a day to remember the end of World War I and was declared a holiday by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919. Originally known as Armistice Day, the holiday became Veterans Day in 1954.” (via Public Holidays)

It’s an incredible way to celebrate the bravery and dedication of all our veterans out there – and it’s just around the corner on November 11th. If you don’t know a veteran or have a veteran in your family, it’s certainly worth taking a moment to remember all the brave men and women who have stood by us and our country – they are all heroes of the most genuine form. From fighting wars years ago to our veterans who serve our country today, here’s a roundup of some of the most poignant moments of recognition and brave souls out there. And, if you’d like to to follow a constant stream of images honoring our veterans, check out #HonoringVets and @deptvetaffairs on Instagram.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial replica, The Moving Wall, is coming to Yazoo this month! Visitors will be able to pay their respects, view loved ones' names, make rubbed copies of the names, and heal during their visit to the Wall. The Moving Wall will be in Yazoo from October 29 – November 2, and will be free and open to the public 24-hours during that time. The Opening Ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. on October 30, and will include speakers Paul Ott, Major General (Ret.) Terrill K. Moffett, and Mississippi's Governor, Phil Bryant. The Opening Ceremony will also include a special ceremony to honor Yazoo County and surrounding area veterans, including Medal of Honor recipient P.F.C. Milton L. Olive, III from Ebenezer. Hosting The Moving Wall is an incredible honor for any community, and Yazoo County is grateful to be able to give this healing opportunity to our country and citizens.
