Have you ever thought about the details that will really make you successful in business? While you may have a goal of making a certain dollar amount each year, earning the respect of your colleagues will mean true success. Even if you attended an Ivy League school or have a fancy job title, these things alone do not command respect. And without the respect of your colleagues, taking your career to the next level may be just that – a far off dream. Here are my six tips on earning respect at work.
How to Earn Respect at Work
- Develop a niche. Set yourself up for being the go-to person for something specific that you love. Learn everything you can about that specific topic and make yourself the resident expert.
- Be inquisitive. You have to want to know about others for them to be curious about you. Put in the effort to learn about your colleagues.
- Show discretion. In a nutshell: stay out of the office gossip.
- Learn how to say no. Don’t be a yes person – set some boundaries so that you can get everything done and done well.
- Help others. If someone needs help and you are able to provide some assistance – than offer!
- Be authentic. People want to know you. The honest and real you. Be yourself and people will gravitate to you.
