They say, “when you think big, you get big.” Thinking big is one of my go-to philosophies. It’s all about dreaming, wishing, and scheming, which are three things I’ve been doing for as long as I can remember. Thinking big comes easy to me and has helped me get to where I am today, but that may not be true for everyone. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the limits we’ve been given in our lives, but the truth is that anything is possible, and if you can dream it, then you can build it. So how do you get past those limiting thoughts and go back to daydreaming like you did when you were a kid? It may be easier than you think. Read ahead for some tips on getting into the right mindset.
How To Start Thinking Big
1. Get An Optimistic Outlook
I understand that becoming an optimist doesn’t happen overnight. It’s going to take some time, especially if you’ve been focusing on the negative aspects of your life. Try to focus on the things that are going right. Thinking positively helps change your mentality, mood, and general outlook on life. To help, try this trick that may seem silly at first: smile! Smile when you notice you’re feeling down and those negative thoughts start to creep in. Doing this keeps things on the right track for eventually believing in yourself and your big dreams.
2. Think of Your Younger Self
Remember when you were a kid and you shamelessly told everyone you were going to grow up to be President, an astronaut, and a famous painter? No one questioned it. No one said, “I don’t know, seems a little too ambitious.” You never questioned it yourself. It’s time to remember all those big ideas and bring back that childlike imagination. You’re going to need it.
3. Do A Little Dreaming
How many times did they have to tell you to stop daydreaming in school until you actually stopped? Sure, our teachers had the best intentions, but they also took away that part of us that we need to make big things happen. So what can we do now? Think of that one fantasy. Maybe it’s your secret dream to meet Oprah, or maybe it’s to become a millionaire. Now close your eyes and try your best to make it feel as real as you possibly can. Watch Oprah as she laughs at your hilarious joke; hold that credit card in your hand as you pay for that Ferrari. Maybe get a journal just for writing down—in as much detail as possible—all those dreams and wishes. All it takes is some imagination to make big thinking happen.
