No one ever admits to being a control freak. But there are
always those moments when you can’t win that make you realize, “Maybe I am a
little obsessed with controlling.”
In most situations we can steer, guide, take action or take
responsibility, but there are a lot of instances we cannot control. Notice how
you feel when you’re losing control. Do you get angry, hurt or feel paralyzed? Well,
guess what: you might not be able to control the situation but you can control
how you let it affect you. You can control this by learning when it’s ok to let
go.
I find that letting go is most important when you’re dealing
with another person who has to make a decision. For example, perhaps you have
the best intentions to help a friend. She’s been dating the wrong guy and you’ve
been coaching her out of it because you know he’s just not good for her. At the
end of the day, it’s her choice. Not yours. This is where you have to learn to
let go. You can’t save everyone.
You will cause yourself a lot of heartache and stress if you
can’t come to terms with the fact that you do not control everything. All you
can do is try your best and take action. But sometimes, the best thing to do is
to do nothing. Learn the difference.
