Mother’s Day is just around the corner and it’s had me thinking a lot about what it’s like to be a mom. I’ve been blessed with an amazing daughter as well as two beautiful grandchildren, making me feel like the luckiest woman in the world. So with the holiday coming up, I thought it would be great to delve into what it’s like to be a mom, what an important job it is and how many awesome mamas there are out there – because there are a lot. Motherhood can be a tough, tough job – but it’s also the most rewarding one out there. Seeing your children grow from small babies into smart, loving adults is an accomplishment that really can’t be beat. From those first days home from the hospital to the day you send them off on their own, raising kiddos has highs and lows. Keep reading for a few lessons on motherhood that I hope you’ll keep close to your heart for years to come.

A Few Lessons on Motherhood

Go with your gut. Even from day one, no one is going to know your child as you do and when you sense something is wrong or when something is new and wonderful – you’ll know. Trust your mama instincts right away.

Just go with the flow. If you are a super regimented person, you’ll learn pretty quickly during those first few days that your world is going to change – a lot. And, what may have been a very routine process in the past is going to be a little different now. So go ahead, let go a little bit and just roll with it.

Don’t forget about yourself. No matter what age your children are, you cannot be the best version of yourself without spending  some time on self-care.  Giving over every moment of your life to your children isn’t the answer to being the best mom out there – but finding balance is. Remember to continue doing the things that make you feel whole – exercising, getting an occasional mani-pedi, or simply enjoying some quiet adult-only time.

Nothing is going to be perfect, and that’s OK. Inevitably, your kiddos will end up with spit up or food on their adorable outfits, the house is going to be a mess from time to time and romance might take on a different spin – but remember that it’s OK. The love you have for your children will become your new normal and the mess and spills will just become the backdrop of a beautiful life.

Pick your battles. Sometimes it’s just easier to let it go – and rather than constantly correcting and discussing, choose the battles that are important. Finding moments to teach your children between right and wrong rather than harping on every little thing. You’ll feel better and they will feel better when you’re more focused on the positive.

Be proud of yourself despite your shortcomings. You’re a mom – and, that’s an incredible accomplishment. Give yourself a pat on the back every single day.

Are you a mom? Got any advice to share?
