Live in the Present: 6 Ways to Take Control of Your Tech Obsession

We have a really hard time living in the moment – either we’re too concerned with what’s happening five minutes (or five years) from now or we’re stuck living in the past. Either way, it would be hard to deny that technology not only feeds that lack of feeling present, but is the cause. Here are my tips for breaking free of your tech obsession and enjoying life when it isn’t through a screen.

Live in the Present: 6 Ways to Take Control of Your Tech Obsession

  1. Do not pick up your phone/iPad at a meeting unless you need to reference notes. Pay attention!
  2. Keep your phone in your bag or pocket while out to lunch or having a meal with your loved ones.
  3. STOP texting or talking on the phone while in the car. Not only can it kill you or someone else, driving can be a great way to decompress from your day and relax on your way home from the office.
  4. Implement a no-emails policy after a certain time. It can feel anxiety-inducing at first but work cannot consume your every minute of every day.
  5. Don’t cross the TMI line. Some things just don’t need to be shared.
  6. #Latergram is a hashtag for a reason! You use your phone to take pictures, that’s great (we all do!) but there’s nothing wrong with waiting until after you finish your food or leave the concert to post on Instagram and Facebook.

Of course there are times where the online community brings everyone together and if you’re attending an event that is centered around social media, then embrace it! Just know it’s okay to put your phone away every now and then.
