Office Holiday Party Etiquette: 8 Basic Do’s & Don’ts

Office Holiday Party Etiquette

‘Tis the season for parties, my friends. And if there’s one invitation you should never pass up, it’s the one to your office holiday celebration. Getting together with colleagues in a social setting is a great way to form bonds and develop friendships. But being there is also an opportunity to socialize and network with execs you may want to get in good with. So before you scoff at that invitation, consider the potential opportunities that could arise if you play it out just right. To help you get ready, I’ve shared a few basic tips that I hope you’ll remember before dipping into too much eggnog. Good luck and have fun!

Office Holiday Party Etiquette: 8 Do’s & Don’ts

1. DO Mingle – Be friendly. This is a chance to get to know everyone on a different level. Try to steer away from the usual work topics and instead talk about family, holiday plans, current events – anything but the report you’re still stressing over. Keep the conversation light and casual.

2. DO Dress appropriately – While it is a social occasion, the dress code is a little different from your usual outings. Remember, these are still your colleagues. There’s no need to wear the shortest skirt or bare too much. A sleek jacket over a delicate cami with some statement jewelry will work just as well. 3. DON’T Let the boss intimidate you – Take advantage of the relaxed social setting and be pleasant and friendly if conversation naturally arises. Otherwise, there’s no need to hound them to get in some face time. There’s no need to come off as strangely over-eager.

4. DO Mind your cocktails – It may be a party but you’ll still be among colleagues. Know your limits, pace yourself, drink water in between cocktails, and try to keep the drinking at a minimum. One to two drinks should be more than plenty.

5. DON’T Be stiff – If there are games or entertainment, join in. Don’t sulk in a corner or hang back alone. Instead, be a team player. Loosen up, have a little fun, and show everyone why it’s so great to have you around.

6. DON’T Bring extra guests – If the invitation says strictly employees, don’t try to bring your spouse or friend. That’s just bad etiquette no matter where you are. Be sure to stick to the guest list requirements.

7. DO Be festive – If there’s a Secret Santa or some form of group gift exchange, do your best to participate and join in the fun. Be sure to keep gifts at the set budget and only purchase gender-neutral gifts.

8. DON’T Forget that it’s still a work event – Keep it professional at all time. Your behavior should be festive and friendly but, above all else, ALWAYS professional.
