Do you ever get tired of people telling you to “look at the bright side”? Even though that can sometimes start to feel a bit annoying and impending on your feelings, it’s actually a great way of turning negative into positive. And, unfortunately that’s often something we have to do. Things happen in our daily lives – whether at work, in relationships, with friends – that can leave us feeling overlooked, slighted or just flat out angry. But rather than letting those negative feelings ruin the day or run our lives, finding the good in a situation is essential. Here’s a look at a few solutions for redirecting your energy and turning those negatives into positives.
How to Redirect Your Negative Energy
Head to a yoga class. Sounds like such a simple solution to a complicated problem, right? Here’s the thing: it’s just that easy. Taking the time to center yourself, be alone with your thoughts and challenge your mind to put it aside can be just the answer for putting things into perspective. Make it extra challenging with hot or Bikram yoga – you’ll be so focused on the task at hand, you won’t even have time to think about those things that are bringing you down.
Find something to laugh about. Having a rough day or a rough moment? Think about the people that make you the happiest or pull up a funny video on You Tube. Taking a few minutes to smile and laugh can easily (and quickly) turn things around.
Jot down the things you’re most thankful for. That can be anything from people to places – your health and love. No matter what it is, sometimes you have to visually remind yourself that life isn’t all bad. We all have things to be grateful for – and those things make the negative stuff worth dealing with.
Go for a run outside. Getting some fresh air does the trick every time. Add some exercise to that mix and you have a match made in heaven. Sometimes it takes all the effort in the world to lace up those running shoes and hit the pavement, but once you do….the wind in your hair and the sun on your skin will leave you feeling like you can do anything you put your mind to.
Try meditation. This can be tough at first, but start by meditating for super short amounts of time – even 2-3 minutes will do the trick. Download a meditation app to get you started and find a quiet spot to close your eyes, breathe deep and put everything into perspective. Meditation seems so simple, but can be incredibly powerful and is an amazing solution for calming nerves and redirecting negative energy.
When the going gets rough and you need to redirect your energy and thoughts, what works best for you?
