Response to Ask Loren (Maria J.)

Hi Maria,

Your email honestly made me smile. There were so many dreams wrapped into one beautiful letter. Although, I know you feel a little uninspired these days, but I don’t think it’s anything you should worry about. I know you’re on the right track.

I can definitely relate to growing up in a small town where everyone knows your business. But you’re right: unfortunately, sometimes people do not want to see other people succeed because they wish they, too, were fearless and able to conquer their dreams. Maria, you are not responsible for other people’s reactions to your success. You can only control how you feel; you cannot control other people’s beliefs or actions. Always remember that. So focus on yourself, and know you are the own director of your life.

Transitioning from high school to college is always a bit tricky. So if you find yourself a little down or confused understand that you’re not a lone—most people in your position feel the same way. So be a little compassionate with yourself. You’ve been going, going for the past four years and all of a sudden you’ve found yourself at a halt. It’s weird, I know. I bet it’s been a long time since you’ve had downtime!

If you’re anything like me, you probably don’t do so well with boredom or being alone. When things get slow, I start freaking out. I’m happiest when things are at a steady speed. But I suggest you embrace this time because you won’t have so time to yourself for much longer. Take this time to gain more knowledge about whatever you’re interested. You mentioned in your email that you hope to one-day work for the United Nations. The UN has publications website where you can purchase different literatures. Maybe there’s a great book waiting to inspire you? Visit their site here. And maybe you have other interests you’ve been meaning to pursue like painting, cooking, etc. Go ahead and find a local class or an online video that can help you learn about any subject you’re interested in. Sometimes, we need to search for inspiration, or better yet, align ourselves with things and people who inspire us.

Maria, I promise you, you are on the right track. You’re only feeling a little down because things are changing and because you have a lot of downtime. Fill that time with things (reading books, taking classes) that will bring you closer to your big dreams. I bet you’ll be so consumed with your new hobby that January will come before you know it!

Best of luck to you, Maria. I look forward to seeing big things from you. Keep me posted on your progress.

xoxo

Loren
