A few weeks ago, a friend of mine recommended this book to
me titled “The Four Agreements.” It was about the fourth time I had heard about
the book, so I figured I’d pick it up. In the book, the author, don Miguel
Ruiz, discusses four principles to live by that will help you create love and
happiness in your life. The concepts are quite simple, but actually following
them can be difficult.
The first chapter is a bit philosophical, but once I got to
the first agreement I couldn’t stop reading. Here’s a quick description of the
four agreements:
- Be
Impeccable with your Word: Say only what you mean, and do not use the word
against yourself or others (gossip!). - Don’t
Take Anything Personally: Once you realize that what people say about you
is their projection of their reality, you will no longer be the victim of
needless suffering. - Don’t
Make Assumptions: Communicate with others as clearly as possible to avoid
drama, misunderstanding, and suffering. - Always
Do Your Best: Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will
avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.
I found these principles to be common sense, yet very
empowering. Once you read the book, you’re going to want to adapt Ruiz’s philosophy
right away, but you’ll no doubt hit some challenges. Thankfully, Ruiz addresses
each of these challenges you may face. At first, when adopting these
agreements, you may feel a bit uncomfortable. But once you get a hang of it,
you’ll see that life is more enjoyable and filled with more happiness and less
suffering.
I found that I already practiced some of the agreements, but
the book made me understand how important my actions and thoughts are to my
happiness and success. I hope this book of wisdom can help you as well.

Loren
