Just because you have limited space doesn’t mean you can’t make a big impact. Trust me, New York is a great city but space is limited, which forces you to make the most of it. You all know how much I love interior decor, so I’m sharing some things I’ve learned about making a small space feel bigger. These tips are simple and should help you work smarter with what you do have. As always, remember to accentuate the positive!
5 Tips for Decorating a Small Space
- Double Up: Find items that serve more than one purpose, like an ottoman that serves as a coffee table and opens to provide storage. Or a dining table that also work as a desk for work and folds out to serve as a kitchen cart, like this one from Ikea.
- Think Big: Just because you’re in a small space doesn’t mean everything else has to be miniature. Using regular, large and oversized pieces will give the room dimension, like large canvas photos or artwork.
- Use Illusions: Use large mirrors to create the illusion that the apartment extends beyond its boundaries. A floor to ceiling mirror is the best option and will also reflect light nicely.
- Set Boundaries: Create separate areas by using accent rugs to define them. Use them under dining tables, couches and next to or under beds.
- Keep it Light: Use lighter paint colors and neutral tones to create what feels like a larger area. Use pops of colors in accent pillows, art, and decorative pieces to refresh the room every season.
