Today was a day
like no other an unforgettable experience. A few weeks ago, I was asked by the
University of Miami ‘Launch Pad’ program to address a full room of aspiring
entrepreneurs on the importance of branding, marketing and social media.
I have to admit Iconsider myself an experienced speaker since I’m used to presenting in front of
25,000 people at the American Airlines Arena, but speaking in front of a leading
generation of entrepreneurs: priceless. My story is a bit unique;
different with lots of obstacles throughout the years that consisted of many
sleepless nights and stressful situations.Like many successful entrepreneurs I did not have the privilege
to attend college. I was only 21 years old when I gave birth to my daughter
Amber, my mother passed away at the young age of 22 and my company Market
America was just getting started.
At this time I was a young mother, a sister, a wife and a young entrepreneur. Becoming
a college student was always a dream of mine an intangible dream that vanished
with time and success. Although, today for that first time I felt this dream, I
sensed the tickle in my gut, I was anxious and the closest I’ve ever felt to
being a college student.
I saw myself in each and every one of the students and entrepreneurs who attended the
presentation. This was I 20 years ago, I was passionate, hungry and determined
to do anything possible to make it happen and succeed in life.
Apple’s creative commander in chief Steve Jobs opened Stanford’s commencement speech with “I
am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest
universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this
is the closest I’ve ever gotten to a college graduation.” Just like
Steve Jobs I felt his position, his honor and his inspiration for this will be
a memorable experience in which I will cherish and never forget for the rest of
my life.
