Netflix first took on the difficult topic of suicide with the Selena Gomez executive produced “13 Reasons Why,” and now they’re tackling eating disorders in the new drama “To The Bone.” The Lily Collins led dark comedy just released its first trailer and they’re not holding back a thing when it comes to discussing such a complicated issue.

The film, written and directed by Marti Noxon (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “UnReal”) tells the story of 20-year-old Ellen (Collins) who is once again battling anorexia. After a fainting spell, she is sent off to an unconventional treatment program where she bonds with other residents battling similar demons. While she is there, she’s treated by Dr. William Beckham (played by Keanu Reeves) who challenges her to face her condition and embrace life.

This film was a huge task for Collins to take on, considering she suffered from an eating disorder in the past. So to lose the weight needed for the role, she worked with professionals to ensure she was staying as healthy as possible.

“I just knew, having had the disorder, I wanted to do Ellen justice by knowing what it was to feel that like recluse-ness and not allowing yourself things,” Lily told R29. “So I worked out, but it started to get to the point where I couldn’t necessarily exercise because of the energy, and I wanted to save all of my energy for the project, and I didn’t want to completely drive myself into the ground. It wasn’t worth it. I didn’t crash diet. We really ate clean, no sauces, oils, it was just very clean eating but in no way crash dieting. That would not have done good for my body and I wanted to treat this as specifically and as healthily as possible.”

“To the Bone” will be available to stream via Netflix on July 14th.
