When Women Support Each Other

La La Anthony & Loren Ridinger and 2015 Market America Convention

It seems that, lately, we hear too much about the negative things women do to each other (the catty competition, the spreading of false rumors, the unfounded accusations) and not enough about the success and supportive relationships that foster and result in wonderful friendships, blossoming businesses, and all-around awesomeness. I don’t know about you, but I’m a little tired of hearing only negative things when I know women are capable of so much more. Just ahead, I hope you’ll dive with me into a few examples of the wonderful things that can happen when women support each other instead. Read on for more details.

Sometimes it can be pretty tough – to support one another when life often feels like an ongoing competition. But in the grand scheme of things – if you can’t support your gal pals, who can you support? Whether you’re working together on a project or you’re helping a good friend through a tough time, when women support each other – it feels pretty good. When it comes to the workplace, supporting other women can be particularly challenging – you want to get ahead and you have to watch your own back – but at the same time, great things happen when you buckle down and work together. So how do you do it? How do you put aside your personal goals and agenda to make teamwork with other women a priority? Well, when it comes down to it – you just do. From business ventures to lifelong friendships, many women have come together over the years to build and develop great things. Here’s a few examples to get you inspired.

My girl La La Anthony and I are an example of turning a solid friendship into a lifelong partnership and successful business venture. When we worked together to bring her ideas and my Motives Cosmetics business together, we had no idea what an incredible success story it would become. Sure – there have been challenging moments – it’s like that in any new business. But, we’ve built something incredible and our friendship is that much stronger and closer all due to seeing our dreams become reality.

Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer are writing a movie together – have you heard? In a recent interview with The New York Times, Lawrence  casually mentioned the screenplay, “Amy and I were creatively made for each other. We have different flavors. It’s been the most fun experience of my life. We start the day off on the phone, laughing. And then we send each other pages. And we crack up. I’m flying out tomorrow to see her in Chicago. We’ll write a little bit with her sister, Kim, who worked with Amy when she was writing ‘Trainwreck.’” Pretty incredible, right? Two well-known celebs come together, write a screenplay (which will undoubtedly be hilarious) and something even more incredible comes out of it: a friendship.

How about Birchbox, the subscription service many of us have grown to know and love? Such a creative idea, Birchbox is a monthly delivery service for anyone looking to try new cosmetics. You receive a box each month filled with trial size samples – it’s so much fun. Founded by two women, Katia Beauchamp and Hayley Barna who met at Harvard Business School – the company has been an incredible success since launching in 2010.
