Marketing to Millenials in 2011

Millenials the most confident and technology driven generation are also the most connected. Born between from 1980 – 1995 relate to brand in deep and complicated ways, according to a study done from Edeleman (the world’s largest PR firm) 83% of Millenials sleep with their cell phones next their bed while 75% have social networking profiles. So how you connect to the most social and technology driven generation?

Listen to the conversation: Millenials are all about engaging in conversations, blogging, leaving messages, connecting with others and making sure their voice gets heard through their peers, social media, via text message. They will do anything and everything to make sure their word is heard.

Create accounts on Facebook and Twitter: Make sure that your company has a Facebook and Twitter profile. Something to keep in mind don’t be over commercial. Millenials can see right through it, be genuine and let your prospective market understand what you’re really about and what you stand for.

Be personal: Give them an opportunity to speak and be heard. Create a two way dialogue with your audience. Whether you let them rate your products, share comments or share their experience with friends, provide them with multiple ways to communicate.

Stay consistent: Regardless of which media type you use, keep your messaging consistent. If you say one thing and do another, or change your messaging frequently, you will not be building the trust necessary to ensure lifetime customer value.

Be Creative add comedy: Millenials like to be entertained, they get bored easily. Use your social networking tools like Youtube, Flickr and Delicious, messages are quickly shared and distributed. Don’t force the issue, rather create something meaningful, fun and worth sharing. Before you know it, the millenials will be sharing and distributing information about your brand.

Brand, Brand, Brand: Millenials are fickle and not brand loyal. Brand your business, stay consistent and creative.

Educate and Impact them: Millenials want to be educated and they want to make a difference. Instead of funneling thousands of dollars into advertising campaigns use that money to impact millenials. Invest in their time, needs and wants.

Engage: Millenials love marketing, and they certainly love brands. Allow them to participate in this process with you. We live in a social driven world of buzz and trends. Millenials who love your product are your biggest fans. Be creative and figure out how to engage with them.

Utilize every platform available to you. Millenials are bombarded with hundreds of messages before they even reach their first class of the day. Make sure you are everywhere, Twitter, Facebook, college dorms, local stores. They are everywhere and your messaging should be everywhere as well.
