What began on Wednesday as a shocking news story of violence and terror out of Paris has finally come to a tragic conclusion. On January 7th, it was reported that three gunmen attacked the offices of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, shooting and killing 12 people. Among the victims were four of the magazine’s well known cartoonists and its editor, who had received death threats in the past and was under police protection due to the magazine’s controversial take on news and current affairs. The attack took place during Charlie Hebdo’s daily editorial meeting.
Today, following two and a half days of searching for the suspects, along with two related hostage situations, the three gunmen and 15 people are confirmed dead, including two police officers. Two of the suspects were identified as the Kouachi brothers, Said and Cherif, both with a history of imprisonment; Cherif had long been known to police for militant Islamic activities.
“It is believed to be the deadliest attack in Paris since 1961, when right-wingers who wanted to keep Algeria French bombed a train, killing 28 people” BBC reported. And in the first break after a long search for these suspects, emergency professionals rushed to treat victims just hours ago during the aftermath of what has been an incredibly fast-moving and horrific series of violent acts on innocent people.
While it’s hard to even find words to comment on this incredible tragedy, I can only hope that the families of the victims find peace. There are hardly words that will do in a situation such as this, other than to say that these senseless acts violence have to stop. Killing over religion and hate is nonsensical and is not the way to spread awareness for any cause. I pray for peace for Paris and for people around the world who have been affected by terrorism in any way. Sadly, that’s been an all-too-common theme in recent months and I truly hope and pray that it ceases to be such a common thread. May we all see better days ahead. God bless.
