Is anyone out there following the U.S. presidential election? As a woman in this country, if you haven’t been following along – this year is probably the best year to pay attention. Not because of all the controversy of the candidates, not even because of the state of the world – but because it’s pretty phenomenal to see the first woman in history to gain the nomination for President from the Democratic Party. It’s a defining moment in history for women from coast-to-coast – and even if Hilary isn’t your pick for President, this moment in time is significant – and one we won’t soon forget.

According to a recent article published by CNN, “Hilary is breaking the ultimate glass ceiling,” and for that we should all be proud. Despite whether you agree with her politics or not, standing up for women and breaking that stereotype is huge – a huge step for womankind and a huge step for mankind, too. As quoted by CNN, here’s what Alyssa Milano had to day about Hilary’s nomination:

“Women, in all our profound glory, can change the world if given the opportunity. I didn’t really realize this, my own innate power, until I had my daughter and I was witness to her power. She has changed my world with her compassion and strength.

I know if given a platform without boundaries, she can change the world. There’s so much more women need to accomplish to feel like we have arrived in American culture. Hillary Clinton’s nomination is hopefully the beginning.”

And, Donna Brazile, Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee (via CNN): “Everything is possible. For the first time in our nation’s history, a woman is the presumptive presidential nominee of a major political party. This is a moment of pride for all Americans, regardless of their political preferences.”

Barbra Streisand weighed in too, “I feel a tremendous rush of pride because this is a woman who is more than qualified to be president. Isn’t it interesting how a barrier seems insurmountable — until it comes down? I hope girls across the country are thinking, ‘That could be me.’ And like I said after the first woman got a best director award, it’s about time!” (via CNN)

From young and old, male and female, political activists to anyone who is simply part of our United States community and culture, this truly has been a defining moment in our country and a significant step forward for society. I am proud to live in a country where we can start to make these strides toward equality and look forward to the days that come.
