It’s tough to believe that while thousands of Texas residents are still working to clean up and recover from the wake of devastation left by Hurricane Harvey, residents in the Caribbean and Florida are preparing (or dealing) with similar circumstances. Hurricane Irma, now being classified as Category 5, is packing “winds of 185 mph, making it one of the most powerful Atlantic storms ever recorded,” said CNN. As Hurricane Irma’s eye roars away from the tiny island of Barbuda and toward St. Martin, residents along its path scrambled to evacuate, and stocked up on water, food and gas.
The massive eye stared down on the tiny island of Barbuda early Wednesday, thrashing it with howling winds before marching along its path on the Caribbean.
Irma’s eye was bigger than Barbuda, CNN meteorologist Jenn Varian said. It packed winds of 185 mph, making it one of the most powerful Atlantic storms ever recorded.
The Category 5 hurricane is “potentially catastrophic,” especially if it hits islands at high tides, the National Hurricane Center said.

Hurricane Irma, a dangerous Category 5 hurricane, blasted the island of Barbuda, an island of 1600 residents, with gusts of at least 155 mph. Irma is now heading toward St. Martin, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispañola, the Bahamas and Cuba before posing a serious threat to Florida and parts of the Southeast beginning this weekend.
