It’s pretty interesting when you think about it – you spend so much time at work, you may know your coworkers better than you know some of your best friends. While you probably don’t share all of your deepest feelings with your coworkers, you know their quirks and idiosyncrasies; and you probably know exactly how they like their coffee.
Figuring out how to build trust with your co-workers is extremely important. What do you think your coworkers would say about you? Are you helping to create a sense of team and build trusting relationships that will help get the job done? Here’s my advice on building trust with coworkers.
Office Etiquette: Building Trust with Co-Workers
- Understand boundaries. You may become closer with certain coworkers and not others – and that’s ok. We all of different levels of what we’re willing to share – especially at work.
- Follow through with commitments. Establishing trust starts by showing that you are trustworthy. If things have to change, be sure to communicate with the team.
- Skip out on gossip. Breaking confidence starts when you share something someone has told you in confidence, so stick to your promise and keep it to yourself.
- Recognize the different talents from everyone. All members of the team will contribute in their own way and it’s important to recognize those contributions.
- Just be nice. There is no reason to get caddy or hurtful at work – if you’re dissatisfied with something, be upfront, but polite.
