On June 30, 2010, Mashable launched Social Media Day as a way to recognize and celebrate social media’s impact on global communication. Today, social media is the heart of global communication; and since its inception, Mashable’s been using social media to connect between cultures, movements and super-fandom.

While every day is essentially Social Media Day, June 30th, 2017 marks the eighth-annual official global celebration. No matter where you live, you can celebrate with us! Learn how to make Social Media Day official in your city, and follow @MashSMDay on Twitter for #SMDay updates. (via Mashable)

Social Media Day: Some Useful Tips to Update Your Profiles

Bring your profiles up to date. You want to showcase who you are today – where you live, what you love and what makes you, you. So take a look at all of your social media profiles and bring them into 2017 with updated photos and info.

Don’t be afraid to try something new. We all have our old standby social media platforms – for me it’s Facebook – but why not take the plunge and check out a new one. If you haven’t looked into creating a LinkedIn profile and putting your business-oriented social media hat on, give it a whirl. You’ll be amazed at how many connections you have out there. Or perhaps, you’re thinking it’s time to see what Snachat is all about. It may be a little daunting at first, but you’ll get the hang of it, so give it a try!

Give video a shot. Video is really where it’s at right now – from live video to pre-recorded, people love having that sense that they’re right there with you. Make it your goal to incorporate video into your social media strategy at least once a week – you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how many of your connections are excited to watch.

Engagement is key. This is the one thing that has stayed strong and will probably never change with social media….it’s social! That means that interacting with others is essential to building a great social media community for yourself. It’s a give and take, meaning rather than only posting about yourself, be sure to get in there and like, comment and share posts that come from your connections or people/businesses you follow.

Tell your story visually. Images have become a major driver of social media, especially on platforms like Instagram. Remember that you can get as creative as you want to – so find new and fun ways to be visually descriptive about what you’re doing, making etc. In other words: take lots of photos and then have fun giving them a spiced up visual twist.

SO…what do you think? Can you use these best practices to kick your social media usage into high gear and rock out Social Media Day?
