We can’t be experts in
everything, right? But we can have advisers who have the knowledge we need.
Now, who exactly are these advisers, and why would they want to help us?
They’re people who aren’t necessarily on our team, but are people we can reach
out to when we need advice on a particular subject. You may even be someone’s
adviser and not even know it!
I know I’ve talked about
this before, but it’s really important to develop relationships with people who
are well versed in their industries, and well connected. When you meet them you
may not have a reason to pick their brains, but you never know when you might.
Always be open to meeting new people because they might be one of your trusted
advisers one day. And always remember to follow up with people you meet.
Do you have any advisers?
Maybe you have someone you go to when you have a social media question. Or
maybe you have someone you go to when you have questions about the art
industry. I definitely have my own set of advisers beginning with JR. And I
like to think I sit on the advisory committee of some of my friends.
If you’re reading this and
think it’s scary to reach out to people, you must get over that fear. If
someone gave you their number or email, they are giving you access to them. Use
the opportunity. Do not be afraid to pick up the phone and call that make-up
artist you met at the salon if you need help with identifying cosmetic trends
to better sell your products. You have nothing to lose. But remember to be
genuine about it. Be genuinely interested in this person and explain to them
how their knowledge can help you. And don’t forget to offer them something
back. Maybe you can refer new clients? After the initial reach-out, you should
be able to develop a relationship—hopefully, even a friendship with this
person—and continue to brainstorm with this person.
I encourage you recognize
people with an expertise and develop a genuine relationship with them.
You’ll only be successful once you acquire enough knowledge on your particular venture. More often than not, the most efficient way to do so is by having a solid group of advisers you can trust. So. although we can’t
possibly know everything about everything, we can know who to go to with
questions.
Who are your advisers?
xoxo
