Have you ever looked around your office and realized you are one of few women in a sea of men? It’s totally normal. The male dominated office is completely common. It’s tough sometimes to compete in a male dominated world. It can be a little intimidating and it makes everyone more competitive. Sometimes in a male dominated field or in the boardroom, you have to get creative and simply remember you can do it – I did! I have been the only woman working with a team of men for over 20 years! So take my advice for working in a male dominated office.
Advice for Working in A Male Dominated Office
- Find a mentor. Foster a relationship with someone in Senior Leadership. A sponsor or mentor will be your advocate for opportunities you wouldn’t otherwise have.
- Do your job. Even if you are a little intimated, do the job you are there to do. Don’t accidently become someone’s assistant.
- Show off your strengths. Whatever your best skills and abilities are, let them shine through.
- Don’t say yes to every project. By stretching yourself too thin, you won’t have the opportunity to be the best you can. Be honest about your workload.
- Stay strong. Just be cool when the boys are being boys. Eventually you will become part of the group.
- Speak up about what you want, need and the goals you have. And, go get ‘em!
