I don’t know about you, but I love makeup. I do! I adore getting glammed up and sparkly, it makes me feel like a million bucks. But, I also love being fresh-faced and makeup free – it’s an incredible feeling and nice to be comfortable with my natural self. It feels pretty good to be able to take off my makeup and head out the door confident that I still look gorgeous. And, with all the celebs out there supporting #nomakeup and natural face, you can’t help but be inspired.
At the recent VMA’s, my girl Alicia Keys caused quite a stir when she went on stage completely makeup free. First of all, she looked absolutely radiant – it was incredible. But, secondly – good for her! If that’s how she feels comfortable, than more power to her. Makeup isn’t for everyone. Some people love it, some do not. Many people use varied forms of it – some wear flashy colors, some stay neutral. But, the bottom line: it’s up to you. The point here is that we all have a choice – and that’s the beauty of life.
When it comes to Alicia, her gorgeous natural look has taken the media by storm this week – everyone has something to say. Here’s what Alicia had to say in Lenny Letter a few months back when she decided to stop wearing makeup all together.

“Women are brainwashed into feeling like we have to be skinny, or sexy, or desirable, or perfect. One of the many things I was tired of was the constant judgment of women. The constant stereotyping through every medium that makes us feel like being a normal size is not normal, and heaven forbid if you’re plus-size. Or the constant message that being sexy means being naked.”
“Every time I left the house, I would be worried if I didn’t put on makeup: What if someone wanted a picture?? What if they POSTED it??? These were the insecure, superficial, but honest thoughts I was thinking. And all of it, one way or another, was based too much on what other people thought of me.”
After the VMA’s Alicia has faced harsh criticism around the web for her #nomakeup movement – the critiques have been pretty harsh including some instances where she has even been accused of wearing some “light makeup.” But, Alicia has handled it all in stride – and with the same amount of beautiful grace she always has. Here’s what she had to say to critics:
Y’all, me choosing to be makeup free doesn’t mean I’m anti-makeup. Do you! pic.twitter.com/Mg0Ug9YA9q

And, that’s exactly the point. We all have a choice. We have the choice to wear makeup of forgo makeup. We have the choice to be anything and anyone we want to be. We can be glamorous or more low-key, we can be over the top or under the radar – it’s up to us to make and have the best life possible. How about you? What makes you most happy – getting glammed up or going natural?
