October is all about Halloween and what better way to get into the spirit than by cuddling with your beau and a tub of popcorn watching a scary movie. Although I prefer to watch a romantic comedy or an Oscar-winning drama, once in a while if I’m up for the thrill I’ll watch one. So if you’re looking for an edge-of-your-seat, thrill-seeking, bone-chilling film to watch tonight, here are my top 10 favorites of all time.
10 Scariest Movies of All Time
10. The Blair Witch Project: The movie that gave birth to the whole “horror movie as faux-documentary,” that inspired such films as Paranormal Activity, is quite an effective scare fest in retrospe
9. A Nightmare On Elm Street 1984: A Nightmare on Elm Street made a huge impact upon its release, thanks to its excellent conceit and amazing villain, and Craven’s talent in building tension and delivering the goods in his murder scenes.
8. Poltergeist: You may want to stop watching TV after seeing this movie
7. The Shining: Aside from being a genuinely scary film, The Shining has left its mark on modern pop culture. Who doesn’t recognize the image of Nicholson poking his head through a doorway and shouting “Here’s Johnny!”
6. Paranormal Activity: I was afraid to sleep for a couple of days after watching this
5. The Omen: Remember, never secretly adopt someone else’s child without meeting the kid’s parents first — or at least seeing a picture.
4. The Ring: Based upon the Japanese film “Ringu” — did successfully carve its own path, and let disturbing visuals and an impending sense of doom ride to good effect.
3. Halloween: This film set the standard for all supernatural serial killer films to follow. And it stars a very young Jamie Lee Curtis.
2. The Thing: The terrifying feeling of not knowing which of your supposed friends and colleagues are who they say they are, and not a shape-shifting alien
1. The Exorcist: Linda Blair’s seminal performance is almost enough to make you believe in demons (that is, if you didn’t believe in them already). Try sleeping after this!
