self-employment

There is no better feeling than having a business to call your own. You call the shots, you make your own schedule and most importantly you don’t have to answer to anyone. With so many businesses outsourcing and requiring more flexible employees, you have the advantage to take your business to the next level. On the flip side, as great as being self-employed sounds, there are cons to the arrangement. No one likes surprises so knowing the ins and outs of self-employment is key.

If you’re ready to take the plunge, here are some tips to start your journey.

1. Evaluate yourself – Having secure employment with a steady income and benefits may be a better option for you than self-employment. Having a stable paycheck allows you to easily plan your future as opposed to self-employment. Review your finances, skills, and lifestyle to determine if self-employment would be a good option for you.

2. Financing- Depending on the type of business you have, funding is essential to get your business off the ground. Before your company generates income you will have to pay for various personal and business expenses. Before choosing self-employment look over your finances, estimate your needs and secure investors to prevent any mishaps.

3. Analyze your business- Knowing your competition is key to self-employment, and will allow you to cater your service or business in a way that would appeal to customers and grow your venture.

4. Make it official- Before you can get the ball rolling, you need to decide how your business will be structured. If you know you need funding to get your idea off the ground, incorporating your business would be a fabulous option. If you can handle any debts and liabilities incurred by the company a sole proprietorship would be best. You will also need to insure your business and decide on a business name if required.

5. Market your business- Depending on your business, getting your first few clients or spreading the word can be challenging. If you are starting with little to no exposure, utilize your resources. Social media is a tremendous outlet that has allowed many successful business owners to thrive in their markets. This business is your passion so have fun with it and build your clientele.

6. Always be professional- Your business is your bread and butter. Maintaining professionalism will gain respect from your clients and help grow your business along the way.

7. Outsource if you need to- If you find that you are juggling to handle all of the responsibilities of running your business, seek help. Outsourcing will allow you more time to focus on other important aspects of your business instead of secondary activities.
