In the quest of adopting healthier eating habits, it was only a matter of time before the vegan diet spread like wildfire. With celebs like Beyoncé and Ellen DeGeneres switching to meat and dairy-free diet, the trend has transformed into a lifestyle.

A vegan diet consists of only consuming plant-based foods and drinks that eliminate all plant products. Not to be confused with vegetarians who still consume dairy and eggs, vegans completely remove any and all foods that are from animals or are an animal by-product. Instead of eating poultry, fish, and dairy, vegans substitute with a wide array of veggies, fruits, nuts, beans, and grains.

Going vegan is no easy feat, but if you’re thinking about changing your eating habits veganism is one of the solutions to achieving healthy hair and skin. What you feed your body on the inside, always shows on the outside. Read on to learn why adopting a vegan diet can ultimately improve the appearance of your hair and skin.

1. Healthy skin.

Vegan diets are packed with nuts and high sources of Vitamin A and E from vegetables. These vitamins play a significant role in maintaining healthy skin because you are feeding your body natural foods. What you put into your body shows on your skin. So stock up on apples, oranges, squash, tomatoes, any fruit or vegetable you can get your hands on that is fresh.

2. Controls sugar metabolism.

A vegan diet is higher in fiber and lower in saturated fat, helping to improve the function of your sugar metabolism including your insulin levels. An insulin imbalance is one of the leading causes of clogged pores that cause acne.

3. Strong, shiny hair.

Rich in vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin B, potassium, selenium, omega 3 fatty acids and more, your hair eats these nutrients up. By increasing your levels of minerals in your body, you are feeding your hair from the inside out. Foods like avocados are healthy fats that promote moisture throughout your body including your hair to help it retain growth. While your hair does need protein to grow, it also requires lots of vitamins and nutrients. Although vegans have eliminated poultry from their diet, you can still get your protein by eating foods like beans, edamame, nuts and brown rice.
