Whether you’re naturally pale or possess an olive complexion, fake tan acts as a second skin which covers blemishes for a flawless finish. If you self tan correctly, that is! Thankfully, we have the best bronzing products on the market now. But failure to prep your skin accurately pre-tanning can still result in the occasional fake tan faux pas. Patchy, orange tan for the weekend, anyone?
There’s nothing enjoyable about having to spend your weekend looking uncomfortably similar to an Oompa Loompa or scrubbing tanning products off your favorite bedsheets and your white chaise lounge. Read on to discover the top tips to achieving bronzed Goddess status at home.
1. Exfoliation is King
Before you do anything, exfoliate! Use a body scrub glove for extra brownie points to slater away dirt and dead skin cells.
2. Hydration, Hydration, Hydration!
Use an oil-free moisturizer on dry areas including knees, ankles, feet, hands, and neck. Wait a couple of minutes to let the moisturizer soak in. Ta-da! You have the perfect canvas to create your tan masterpiece.
3. Painting Time
Use a tanning mitt to apply fake tan all over for more even coverage, and to prevent tell-tale darker hands.
4. Air Dry
Air dry for 5-10 minutes to let the tan dry (preferably not on the lawn where the neighbors can see you). Enlist the help of a hairdryer for expedited drying.
5. Marinate
Most tanning products need to be left on for a minimum of 4 hours to soak into your skin more efficiently.
6. Rinse
After 4-8 hours, you’re ready to rinse off and admire your bronzed glow.
