With fall just around the corner, making sure you get enough exercise during the cooler months is high on the priority list. Summer has been a bevy of activity – with walks on the beach, time outside with the kids and dog, evening runs – you name it. But now that the cooler weather is setting in, figuring out how to stay in shape all year long is important. From capitalizing on indoor workouts to bundling up and heading outdoors – don’t let the cooler temps get you down! Here’s a look at a few exercise ideas for cooler months – enjoy!
When the sun is still shining, even though it’s a bit brisk:
Get going on that yardwork! Raking leaves probably burns more calories than you’d imagine.
Walk the dog! Your pup loves being outside no matter what the temp – so let him or her be your inspiration to bundle up and head out.
Running – just because it’s chilly doesn’t mean your daily runs have to stop. As long as the sidewalks are clear of snow and debris – bundle up and hit the streets. The fresh air will feel amazing.
When the snow starts to fall how about trying something new like snowshoeing or cross-country skiing?
How about going for a hike? This is something the whole family can enjoy – checking out the gorgeous fall colors, all while squeezing in your workout.
Sometimes it’s just too cold and rainy – and you have to head indoors:
When the temps drop super low, head to the mall! It’s a great spot to go for long power walks and window shop while you’re at it.
Home exercise – you know all those crunches and lunges you did outside during the summer? Take them indoors. Just clear a small spot – just enough room for your yoga mat – and get moving.
Take the stairs! Leave the elevator for someone else and opt stairs whenever possible.
How about a winter sports league? Indoor soccer or volleyball is a great option for getting your indoor workout on and having a great time while you’re at it.
Not sure you have enough motivation to think of the moves on your own? YouTube is flooded with great exercise routines – from legs to abs and even upper body.
Join a health club or the YMCA – some even offer punch cards rather than a full membership for group exercise classes.
Yoga is great cool month option – a nice warm studio and a tough workout. An excellent option.
